The Legend of the Stanton Drew Stone Circles

The 6,500+ year old Stanton Drew Stone Circle near Somerset is a sight to behold. Although this is the third largest complex of prehistoric standing stones in England, it is surprisingly little known. It consists of three neolithic stone circles, two avenues, and an associated group of stones refered to as the Cove.

It’s “Great Circle” measures 371 feet in diameter, making it the second largest stone circle in Britain and one of the largest neolithic monuments to have ever been engineered. It features 26 surviving massive upright stones made either sandstone, breccia or limestone.

Man vs Megalith: me & one of the stones

Legends whisper how a wedding celebration was once being held through Saturday evening. However, during the festivities, a strange man clothed in black appeared and started to play his violin for the merrymakers… He played his intoxicating music hour after hour.

The wedding party lost track of time & continued to dance after midnight, & continuing into holy Sunday morning… Suddenly, when dawn broke, everyone in the wedding party was suddenly turned to stone… And they are still awaiting the Devil who promised to come back someday and play again for them…
