Located on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula at the Chichen Itza archaeological site is a mysterious structure known as the Ossuary, also dubbed “the High Priests Tomb.” Adorned at its corners with reliefs of the rain-god Chaac, it stands over 30 feet high and features nine staggered layers on each of its four sides.

Located at the center top of this structure between the first two carved serpents is an entrance, that is lined with stones, that descends down vertically to the base of the pyramid. This passageway continues another 40 feet beneath the base and leads into a cave where seven tombs were discovered along with skeletons, rock crystals, copper bells and jade artifacts.

And according to local legend, there is a 10 mile long tunnel that leads from this cave to a nearby Mayan city – likely Yaxuná. According to tradition, this tunnel or cavern represents the gate between the world of the dead and paradise.
